DIY Kids Crafts: T-Shirt Bag

You know that old saying, "When life hands you a t-shirt, make a t-shirt bag"? Yeah, us neither. But that still isn't going to stop us from trying out this awesome (and super easy!) craft project from the Cakies blog. Heads up: it does require some rudimentary sewing skills, but it's just a few times and it's a straight line. You can do it!

This is really a great indoor DIY kids craft to do together. And t-shirt bags are useful for lots of things - storing small toys, taking to the grocery store to avoid plastic and paper bags, and hauling things to the beach (because they're easy and safe to wash). If you have a couple of old t-shirts lying around, you can even make them for the whole family. Here's what you need:

  • T-shirts (youth sizes are better for smaller children, but if you want to make a bag for yourself, you can use a standard adult-sized t-shirt)
  • Fabric paint or pens (Rubyellen from the Cakies blog recommends Tulip Soft Fabric Paint)
  • Paint brush
  • Palette paper or cardboard
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread

Step 1: Get the hard stuff out of the way.

If the t-shirt is new, start by washing and ironing it. If it's already been worn in, make sure it's clean and iron it to get any wrinkles out. Flip it inside out and lay it down flat. Sew the bottom of the t-shirt up so that the bottom opening is closed off.

Step 2: Cut off the sleeves and the neck.

The next step is to cut off both of the sleeves. You can use scissors to just cut straight up from the bottom of the sleeve to the top of the shoulder. Just try to make the lines as even as possible. Next, cut around the collar in a semicircle to cut out the neck of the t-shirt. Aim to leave about three inches width for each handle.

Step 3: Reinforce the handle straps.

To make sure that your t-shirt bag doesn't rip apart the second something goes into it, you'll need to reinforce the shoulder straps. Sew along the both of the shoulder lines at the top of the handles.

Step 4: Now you're ready to paint!

Flip your t-shirt right side back. Use the palette paper or cardboard to slide into the shirt so that the paint doesn't soak through from one side to the other. Use the fabric paint and the paint brushes to decorate until your heart is content. Make sure to let the paint dry completely before flipping it over to paint the other side.

Once the paint is dried, you're ready to fill it up and start flaunting your new t-shirt bag around town.
